frequently asked questions about hospice care

What Does Hospice Mean?
Hospice is a concept of care not a specific place. The hospice concept of care was derived from medieval times, symbolizing a place where travelers, pilgrims and the sick, wounded and dying could find rest and peace. The modern day hospice offers a program of care for patients and their families/caregivers facing terminal illnesses.

Does Hospice pay for Nursing Homes?
Hospice pays for care in facilities under routine home care. Hospice does not pay room and board charges for Nursing Homes. All services provided in private homes are also provided in facilities.

Is there anyone who can stay with the patient while I work?
The Hospice Benefit does not provide sitter services. The hospice can provide information on agencies that provide sitter services. These Services would be an out of pocket expense.

How long do you think the patient will live on hospice?
That is very individualized with a lot of factors involved. The hospice team will keep you informed of significant changes that indicate when death is nearing. In the meantime let’s focus on quality of life.

How long do the nurses and aides stay when they visit?
The nurse and aide visits approximately an hour. The RN supervises the aide visits. The aide stays and provides bathing, dressing, personal hygiene, and he/she may also change bed linens and perform light house hold chores. The nurse manages the medical needs such as wound care, medications, equipment needs, and supply needs.

When do I call a nurse?
We have an Registered Nurse on duty 24/7 that is available to answer any and all questions.

Can a patient sign up for Hospice care without a signed ‘Do Not Resuscitate’ order?
YES, we prefer a signed DNR order but the decision can be discussed at a later time when the patient/ family are prepared to discuss the DNR process.

Who pays for Hospice?
Hospice is a benefit under Part A Medicare, and also most private insurances have a hospice benefit. Medications, medical equipment and supplies related to the terminal condition are also covered under the hospice benefit.
