Crater Community Hospice awarded The Cameron Foundation's Excellence in Organizational ManagementCrater Community Hospice, CCH, has been named recipient of the 2009 Excellence in Organizational Management Award by The Cameron Foundation, TCF, in their annual recognition program. The application for the coveted award utilized an internal audit which measured the organization’s management processes against national best practice standards. CCH was honored with first place, demonstrating excellence in overall organizational management. Standards in the self assessment included areas such as fiscal management, governance, resource development, human resources, volunteers, program management and evaluation, planning and marketing and communications. The competitive award comes with an unrestricted gift of $30,000. “We are extremely honored to receive TCF’s Excellence in Organizational Management Award, said Brenda D. Mitchell, Crater Community Hospice CEO. “Receiving this award confirms for us that we are focused on the right areas to maintain a leadership role in providing vital services to the community. We have identified priority goals in critical areas, so it is gratifying to see that our organization’s hard work is recognized and appreciated.” . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Message from the CEOBrenda D. Mitchell, RN, MSN, CS, CHPN Chief Executive Officer Once again it is nice to have the opportunity to reach out to our hospice supporters through our newsletter. I hope everyone is looking forward to another beautiful fall. CCH is very honored to be the recipient of the Excellence in Organizational Management Award presented by the Cameron Foundation. Everyone at CCH works very hard on a daily basis to provide high quality care to those in the communities we serve, but we must also remember that as a business, we have to be good stewards of our funds in order to continue to be available to provide our services. With the difficult economic times faced in the last year, CCH has monitored the business practices very closely to make sure our organization maintains the resources needed to plan for our current and future families. To be recognized with this award is a testament to the strong commitment CCH has for the community. The coming year brings even more challenges: potential Medicare cuts, more uninsured families, more complex situations among families. The unrestricted funds we receive will increase our ability to carry out our mission to provide our services regardless of the recipient’s ability to pay. I hope you enjoy this issue of the Beacon and as always, thank you for your continued support to CCH. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . When an employee grievesNearly 60% of those caring for someone 50 or older are working. 48% are full-time employees and 11% work part-time. These days, most people spend more of their waking hours at the workplace than at home. People who work together may become close like an extended family. Therefore when a colleague dies or one is grieving a death or a loss, the impact on his/her co-workers can be tremendous and can influence the workplace in a variety of ways. Crater Community Hospice has been selected as a partner with the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization’s Caring Connections workplace outreach initiative, It’s About How You LIVE—At Work, funded by the Jacob & Valeria Langeloth Foundation. The LIVE—At Work initiative strives to increase awareness about the needs of working caregivers. “In order for people to be productive and be able to keep their jobs, they need to feel supported and understood as they struggle with work-life balance while taking care of their ill, elderly, or frail family members,” explains Crater Community Hospice CEO, Brenda Mitchell, “When these issues arise, CCH is a vital resource for the business community.” Through this opportunity, CCH goes to the work-place to meet with employers and staff regarding workplace needs. Support and resources will be available for employees who are care giving for a loved one that is seriously ill, dealing with grief and loss issues, or need more information about planning for future healthcare decisions and other end-of-life issues. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Help for difficult questionsHow do you want to live out your final days? How do you envision the end of life for your loved ones? It’s not something that most of us want to think about. But if we turn away from these difficult questions, we may miss the opportunity to make important decisions about the quality of care we, or our family members, receive at life’s end. Crater Community Hospice provides comprehensive comfort care to people with a terminal illness, and support to their loved ones. The goal of hospice is to provide pain and symptom management when a cure is no longer possible, so that the person can live in dignity at home or in a home-like setting. Families have the support they need to nurture and care for their loved ones. We look forward to hearing and sharing your hospice story! . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . A Volunteer's StoryWhen I arrived Ms. Mary was in her room so this gave us some quality time together before she went to supper. I talked to Ms. Mary about the picture of her two adorable grandchildren and she just smiled. There was a picture on the table of her and her husband which was so pretty. I asked her if the man in the picture was her husband and at that time tears came down her cheeks. I think Ms. Mary realizes more than we think she does. We listened to some music and I talked with her about the old time favorites, Frank Sinatra, Perry Como, Bing Crosby, etc. which made her smile. She was sitting close enough to the window for us to look out and talk about the cool air, the warm sun and the approaching fall sea-son. Ms. Mary does not communicate much but if you look at her when you are talking, it is quite ap-parent she is trying to take in everything that is said to her. The nurse came in to take her blood sugar, which she doesn’t like, so I stayed and held her hand while this was done. Just before she was rolled down for supper, the nurse came in and gave her an insulin shot. When I got ready to leave, I looked at Ms. Mary and told her I loved her and she looked at me, smiled and said, “I love you.” Ms. Mary loves for people to sit and talk to her and she loves for someone to tell her they care. Isn’t that what volunteering is all about? . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Memorial Garden will host commemorative bricks
